March Contest – Kitchen Gadget Giveaways!

Happy Spring!  Spring cleaning.  Spring forward.  Spring training.  Spring rolls. Spring into action. I know it’s not official, but March is here and we are so ready for Spring. Bring on the asparagus, rhubarb and artichokes! We’ve got recipes waiting!

Lately, Mary and I have been feeling a little lonely here in our corner of the blogosphere. It’s been kind of quiet. So we are hoping you will  join us this month for a little friendly conversation.

For the month of March, we’ll be asking you a question each week.  Post your response to that question by making a comment at the bottom of the post and you’ll be entered to win a “we can’t live without it!” kitchen gadget.  Winners will be announced on the blog each Friday.  Yay!

This week’s question is:
“Which kitchen gadget could you not live without and why?”

  1. nancy lee says:

My favorite kitchen gadget are my cookie scoops, I use them of course for cookies, and ice cream and muffins and biscuits and whatever else I can think of. I bake a lot of cookies and I just couldn’t do it without my scoops…they are the best.

  2. Julie says:

I love my gadgets and use many but one of my go-to items is my steamer. I use it for rice and for veggies so it gets used nearly daily. Love this blog – thanks for your time and attention to detail.

  3. manda says:

One is hard to pick! So mine is a tie… kitchen scissors and tongs (just learned the wonders of tongs and their use in the kitchen).

  4. jacquie says:

my favorie utensil would be a wooden spoon.

  5. Jeanne says:

Feeling like I need to go out and buy me some tongs (not to be confused with thongs…)! We are gadget deprived at our house, but I do love my citrus and cheese microplanes! Close second is my melon baller. Oh, and I think we have the same Target toaster as Siri!!! Shiny red?

  6. Mo Johnson says:

No question…locking OXO tongs….in a load of sizes. They are my favortire thing to use.

  7. Susan says:

My Keurig, no contest. I wouldn’t even be cooking some days if I didn’t get that strong coffee into my system. 🙂 Other thoughts are musts for my toddlers – toaster and a colander for all of the pasta and fresh berries eaten at our house.

    • JoyAldrich says:

I love my morning coffee, too! I’m a big fan of the Nespresso Pixie. Either way, I agree that not much would get done around here without my am coffee 🙂

  8. Ok who is kidding themselves with ONE utensil……?

    Favorite Utensil(s):
    * Wooden spoon – so muli-purpose, especially with kids in the kitchen 🙂
    * (Natural) wood cutting board (mine also comes with 20 professionally sharpened, fully forged handled Henkle knives in various sizes as it turns out)
    * Turkish pepper mill (large) – yes, this would be a first thing rescued should my house catch fire

    Favorite Stovetop Item(s):
    * Would be these two items; copper saute pan and pasta pot with nested strainer

Favorite Small Electric (for the kitchen that is):
    * Mini Cuisinart chopper – for big jobs that is since I am a purist and love the chopping prep work for all meals

I realized hard and fast that I own every possible utensil I would ever use when I received a $50 gift card to an online cooking store and it took me 3 years to use it (I was awaiting something new and glamorous on the cooking utensil front to emerge). I finally settled on a FANTASTIC baking sheet and a heavy weight sandwich press for paninis….oh what a good idea for Saturday lunch!

    • Sheesh, one more to be added – tongs – use them nearly every day….my certain unsung hero the tongs!

      • MaryMiller says:

Michelle – I agree with you 100% about kitchen tongs!! They are my essential cooking and serving tool. I do not know how people live without them. I would have to add my Zojirushi thermal carafe coffee maker as well… great coffee that stays fresh all morning – and since I work from home, that is a must!

    • MaryMiller says:

Michelle – I think I want to come over and cook at your house!!

  9. Colleen Stromatt says:

This is a tough one…I’m such a gadget girl but I’d have to say my Nespresso Mini. It is quick and easy and it makes me the best cup of coffee every morning! Plus it is super fast.

    • JoyAldrich says:

Ah, yes! You know that’s on my list of favorites, too. I still find myself giddy at the thought of making my coffee each morning. Such a pleasure!

  10. Jeannie says:

My favorite kitchen gadget is my laptop!! It has to be!! How else could I find so many cool recipes and read your fabulous blog? Seriously though, I live in a small place and hate to waste space (and money) so I only own two cookbooks.
Keep up the fabulous and fun blog!

    • JoyAldrich says:

Siri~ I’m in the market for a toaster ASAP! Which one are you in <3 with?

Jeannie~ I concur! I can't cook without my laptop or iPad since just about all my recipes are stored online. Thanks for your sweet comments and encouragement!

      • Siri says:

Joy, it is a totally basic Oster chrome toaster (think I got it at Target). But it is big enough to fit all sizes of bread, and you can adjust the toasting levels to match what you want. Easy to maintain and clean.

        • JoyAldrich says:

I’m guessing it’s one of those things that they just don’t make anymore. It seems small appliances just don’t last the way they used to. I just ordered a Kalorik Aqua 2 Slice toaster based on the recommendation from Cook’s Illustrated (i.e. my kitchen bible). Fingers crossed…

  11. Siri says:

My toaster. Although my microwave and Keurig are close seconds (and, yes, this does say something about my life), I have had a love-love relationship with my toaster for much longer. Toasted bread just tastes better!
